Day 15: a snowy day in Munich’s Odeonsplatz

Painting: a snowy day in Odeonsplatz, Munich
A snowy day in Odeonsplatz, 30 x 40 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

Usually I rely heavily on vibrant colors to make my paintings interesting, so this painting was a good way for me to challenge myself. The original scene includes similarly-colored buildings, snow, and sky; I wanted to have this monochromatic feeling come through without ending up with a boring painting. There’s one or two small details I want to tweak, but otherwise I’m pretty happy with the results.

November is Art Every Day Month! I’ll be posting a new small painting here each and every day. After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop.

  1. This, and the pomegranate from yesterday, are particularly fetching.

    Wow, this is fantastic! The colours are so reminiscent of that low winter sun. I’m going to find it difficult to restrain myself at your open studio!

  4. I like that the tints added to the whites make it interesting with the small bits of stronger color. The golden windows in the bottom left corner keep it from feeling too cold.

  5. I love the muted palette and after the extreme heat and humidity of the last day or two over here… I wouldn’t mind a bit of that snow xx

    Thank you all for your comments!

    @HH – We must have similar tastes, as the two you mention are some of my favorite paintings from the month, as well.

    @Lia – Lack of restraint fully encouraged. :)

    @Ann Marie – I am honored to have earned 3 wonderfuls. :)

    @Wendy – Those windows are orange in my reference photo, too, although it’s unclear why. I’ve decided it’s a big roaring fire, with chestnuts roasting.

    @Tracey – Hope your extreme heat dies down soon! I have my fingers crossed that we’ll get our first snow here this week.
