Day 25: more Munich

Oil Painting Alter Peter Munich Study
Alter Peter Study, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. In honor of Black Friday, I’ve added a new batch of paintings to my Etsy store, including my pomegranate painting and the last of the leaf paintings. Way more comfortable than sleeping outside Best Buy in the rain! Which reminds me, over at Studio Mailbox, TJ has several other ideas for your gift shopping today, including handmade items from around the internet.

This weekend I am going to be crazy busy getting ready for my Open Studio. Lots of nails will be going in the walls as I decide where to hang everything. Also, I need to figure out what we’ll be serving. Probably Christmas cookies of some sort, in addition to other stuff. I’d love to serve glühwein (hot mulled wine), but I don’t think that’d be feasible unless I rented some equipment, and I’m probably too lazy to do that. Could be an idea for next year, though.

November is Art Every Day Month. I’ll be posting a new small painting here each and every day. After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), most of the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop. Paintings from the beginning of the month are already there! Christmas cards, too.

Day 24: Thanksgiving dumpling squash

If there were any wall space whatsoever in my kitchen, I might like to hang this painting in there. It reminds me how tasty these squash are. Can’t wait to roast up the models for lunch!

This Thanksgiving, I am especially thankful for all of you who take the time to look at my art, comment on posts, and in general offer support to me as an artist. I couldn’t do it without you!

The Munich Christmas markets start this weekend! Yay!

I am busy getting ready for my December 4th Open Studio. Invitations went out yesterday, and it has been so fun hearing back from people who are excited to come. If you’ll be in Munich that date and would like an invitation, please contact me (you can find my email address on the About Page).

Day 22: Dementor Bridge

Painting: Gebsattelstrasse Munich
Gebsattelstraße, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

This is a bridge in my Munich neighborhood which has a creepy-looking statue of the Münchner Kindl (the city’s cloak-wearing mascot) on it; some friends have dubbed it Dementor Bridge, due to the Kindl’s similarity to certain characters in the Harry Potter books. I think it’s a name that’s going to stick, at least in my head.

This painting is the third of my AEDM ones to sell before being dry enough to list in my Etsy shop. Have to love those enthusiastic collectors!

Day 20: revisiting Wienerplatz

Painting: Munich Wienerplatz study #3
Wienerplatz Study #3, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

I am really enjoying painting every day, even though some days I sit down at the easel and feel a bit idea-less. Nothing sounds appealing to paint. None of my reference photos look interesting, none of the still-life objects I have in the house look painting-worthy. I hate that feeling. But, the commitment I made (however non-binding) to post a new painting each day of November is usually enough to get me to do some painting anyway, even on those days when I’m resisting it. That is what I love about Art Every Day Month – it pushes me to create paintings I wouldn’t have otherwise made. Some days the muse just needs a good flogging.

This painting is a variation on a scene I have painting a couple times before. Today was one of those idea-less days, so I decided to go back to a scene that I knew I liked.

How do you get going on days when you don’t feel inspired?

Day 19: Postcard from the Christmas market

Painting: postcard from the Christmas market
A Postcard from the Christmas Market, 18 x 13 cm, oil on canvas panel, €70, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting for sale on Etsy.

This painting is smaller than what I usually paint. So small (and thin – it’s on canvas board) that it almost feels like a postcard. Thus the title.

Are the vague faces in the foreground too creepy?

Day 18: Christmassy onions and garlic?

Posted by on 18 November 2011 | Comments Off

Christmas painting onions and garlic
Onions & garlic & greenery, 24 x 18 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante.

Hey, if the Germans can use pickles as Christmas tree decorations, why can’t I use garlic and onions? OK, perhaps it would not be the sweetest-smelling Christmas tree on the block.

These pine branches are fun to paint. Perhaps I’ll try to find something more christmassy (like clementines and cranberries) to include in my next still life with them.

Day 17: Munich’s Volksbad on the Isar

Posted by on 17 November 2011 | 5 comments

Volksbad Munich original painting
Munich’s Volksbad on the Isar, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

The Müller’sches Volksbad is Munich’s incredibly beautiful Art Nouveau indoor swimming pool. It is located next to a shallow part of the Isar, the river that runs through the city. I love looking at it. And painting it.

I am really starting to enjoy this painting-every-day business. I might have to declare more months to include art every day (but ask me again tomorrow or the next day when I’m less than happy with whatever painting I produce).

After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop. Paintings from the beginning of the month are already there, as are a couple Christmas cards based on my seasonal Munich paintings.

Day 16: Christmas clementines and cranberries

Christmas painting clementines and cranberries
Clementines and cranberries, 15 x 15 cm, oil on canvas, €65, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

A still life containing pine branches is automatically going to have a Christmas theme, isn’t it? This one started out as just clementines and branches, but as I was painting I decided it needed a small splash of red. Oh-so-conveniently, I had some fresh cranberries in the fridge. They made the perfect addition to the scene.

If you’ll be in Munich on December 4th, I hope you’ll stop by my Open Studio.

Day 15: a snowy day in Munich’s Odeonsplatz

Painting: a snowy day in Odeonsplatz, Munich
A snowy day in Odeonsplatz, 30 x 40 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

Usually I rely heavily on vibrant colors to make my paintings interesting, so this painting was a good way for me to challenge myself. The original scene includes similarly-colored buildings, snow, and sky; I wanted to have this monochromatic feeling come through without ending up with a boring painting. There’s one or two small details I want to tweak, but otherwise I’m pretty happy with the results.

November is Art Every Day Month! I’ll be posting a new small painting here each and every day. After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop.
