Oil Painting Alter Peter Munich Study
Alter Peter Study, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. In honor of Black Friday, I’ve added a new batch of paintings to my Etsy store, including my pomegranate painting and the last of the leaf paintings. Way more comfortable than sleeping outside Best Buy in the rain! Which reminds me, over at Studio Mailbox, TJ has several other ideas for your gift shopping today, including handmade items from around the internet.

This weekend I am going to be crazy busy getting ready for my Open Studio. Lots of nails will be going in the walls as I decide where to hang everything. Also, I need to figure out what we’ll be serving. Probably Christmas cookies of some sort, in addition to other stuff. I’d love to serve glühwein (hot mulled wine), but I don’t think that’d be feasible unless I rented some equipment, and I’m probably too lazy to do that. Could be an idea for next year, though.

November is Art Every Day Month. I’ll be posting a new small painting here each and every day. After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), most of the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop. Paintings from the beginning of the month are already there! Christmas cards, too.

Painting: Evening at the Christmas Market
Evening at the Christmas Market, 15 x 15 cm, oil on canvas, €65, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

The Munich Christmas markets start this weekend! Yay!

I am busy getting ready for my December 4th Open Studio. Invitations went out yesterday, and it has been so fun hearing back from people who are excited to come. If you’ll be in Munich that date and would like an invitation, please contact me (you can find my email address on the About Page).

Day 22: Dementor Bridge

Painting: Gebsattelstrasse Munich
Gebsattelstraße, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

This is a bridge in my Munich neighborhood which has a creepy-looking statue of the Münchner Kindl (the city’s cloak-wearing mascot) on it; some friends have dubbed it Dementor Bridge, due to the Kindl’s similarity to certain characters in the Harry Potter books. I think it’s a name that’s going to stick, at least in my head.

This painting is the third of my AEDM ones to sell before being dry enough to list in my Etsy shop. Have to love those enthusiastic collectors!

Day 19: Postcard from the Christmas market

Painting: postcard from the Christmas market
A Postcard from the Christmas Market, 18 x 13 cm, oil on canvas panel, €70, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting for sale on Etsy.

This painting is smaller than what I usually paint. So small (and thin – it’s on canvas board) that it almost feels like a postcard. Thus the title.

Are the vague faces in the foreground too creepy?

Day 17: Munich’s Volksbad on the Isar

Volksbad Munich original painting
Munich’s Volksbad on the Isar, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

The Müller’sches Volksbad is Munich’s incredibly beautiful Art Nouveau indoor swimming pool. It is located next to a shallow part of the Isar, the river that runs through the city. I love looking at it. And painting it.

I am really starting to enjoy this painting-every-day business. I might have to declare more months to include art every day (but ask me again tomorrow or the next day when I’m less than happy with whatever painting I produce).

Day 15: a snowy day in Munich’s Odeonsplatz

Painting: a snowy day in Odeonsplatz, Munich
A snowy day in Odeonsplatz, 30 x 40 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

Usually I rely heavily on vibrant colors to make my paintings interesting, so this painting was a good way for me to challenge myself. The original scene includes similarly-colored buildings, snow, and sky; I wanted to have this monochromatic feeling come through without ending up with a boring painting. There’s one or two small details I want to tweak, but otherwise I’m pretty happy with the results.

Day 13: hot mulled wine at the Christmas market

Gluehwein at the Christmas market painting
Glühwein at the Christmas Market, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

This painting is about as cutesy as I get. Two friends are enjoying mugs of glühwein, or hot mulled wine, at a Christmas market on a cold evening. Munich’s Christmas markets start in less than two weeks, and I can hardly wait.

Speaking of Christmas, I have Christmas cards based on my Christmas market paintings available now in my Etsy shop (in US$) and my DaWanda shop (in €).

Day 8: the view down the street

Painting: the view down my street
The view down the street, 24 x 18 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

This is an interpretation of the view I see if I stick my head out my studio window and look to the left. It’s not my usual style, but it was fun to paint.

I apologize for posting photos with so much glare on them. I’m having trouble figuring out the best way to photograph my wet paintings. Dry paintings I can move to spots without glare, but with the wet ones I’m worried about getting paint all over the apartment. Anyone have any tips?

Day 7: big breakfast

original painting: big breakfast
Frühstück (Breakfast), 18 x 24 cm, oil on hardboard, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

This painting was inspired by the big, beautiful breakfasts served at a restaurant in my neighborhood in Munich. This frame only captures a part of one breakfast: a croissant, an egg, cheese, jams in small glasses, yoghurt, grapes, tomatoes, and two pats of butter perched on a bed of arugula. It’s almost too beautiful to eat.

Day 3: a snowy day at the Christmas market

Christmas market at Chinese Tower Munich
A snowy day the the Christmas Market (Chinese Tower), 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available in my Etsy shop.

I realize I’m fast forwarding a bit from yesterday’s autumn leaves, but I am so excited for Christmas market season I can hardly stand it. December is my favorite month of the year here in Munich. There are Christmas markets all over the city, clusters of little stands decorated with lights and pine branches. They sell hot mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and other delicious things. Painting Christmas market scenes just makes me all the more eager for the season to start.

This particular Christmas market is held in the middle of the English Garden (Munich’s large city park) in an area that is a beer garden during the rest of the year. The round five-story wooden structure in the middle is known as the Chinese Tower.
