Wrapping up 2011

Radishes, original oil painting
Radishes, 20 x 20 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

2011 has been a wonderful year for me and my art career. I’ve painted more than ever. My paintings have found their way onto the walls of so many new collectors. I’m ending the year full of ideas for future projects. Things are good!

For 2012, I’m looking forward to keeping up my momentum in the studio. They say that an artist should have three exhibits’ worth of work on hand at any given time, and next year I’d like to actually do that. I’m also planning to explore new avenues for exhibiting and selling my paintings both in person and online. I’m excited to see where my art takes me next.

I am so grateful to all of you who have visited this blog and followed my progress during this past year. Thank you! And I’ll be back with more paintings and posts after the holidays.

Day 29: sunny Odeonsplatz

Posted by on 29 November 2011 | 4 comments

Painting: a sunny morning in Odeonsplatz
A sunny winter morning in Munich’s Odeonsplatz, 30 x 40 cm, oil on canvas, €325, ©2011 Julie Galante. Available for sale on Etsy.

More Munich for you today. This painting is kind of a companion piece to day 15′s Snowy Day in Odeonsplatz. It also depicts a winter day, but without snow (I know it’s winter by how low the sun is in the southern sky, leaving much of the square in shadow).

November is Art Every Day Month. I’ll be posting a new small painting here each and every day. After they have had time to dry (a couple weeks), most of the original paintings will also appear in my Etsy shop. Paintings from the beginning of the month are already there! Christmas cards, too.

Day 28: Munich Wittelsbacherbrücke

Painting: Munich Wittelsbacherbruecke
Munich Wittelsbacherbrücke, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

This is a bridge in central Munich called Wittelsbacherbrücke (don’t you just love German?). The church looming in the background is St. Maximilian.

I’m on a Munich streak here, which is quite serendipitous since little Munich paintings tend to be quite popular at events like my upcoming Open Studio. Less than a week to go!

Day 27: Miniature Munich

Alter Peter Munich Painting
Alter Peter in Miniature, 15 x 15 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

I don’t usually do cityscapes on these tiny (6 x 6 inch) canvases. I don’t have the world’s steadiest hand, so putting in such small details isn’t easy (that’s why this painting is pretty loose). I think the result is kind of cute, central Munich in miniature.

More Open Studio prep going on around here today (it’s only a week away!). Nails are going in for a second display wall for little daily paintings, since I have so many on hand thanks to Art Every Day Month. I just hope that will all this shuffling around we don’t forget that a lot of them are still wet.

Day 25: more Munich

Oil Painting Alter Peter Munich Study
Alter Peter Study, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available on Etsy.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. In honor of Black Friday, I’ve added a new batch of paintings to my Etsy store, including my pomegranate painting and the last of the leaf paintings. Way more comfortable than sleeping outside Best Buy in the rain! Which reminds me, over at Studio Mailbox, TJ has several other ideas for your gift shopping today, including handmade items from around the internet.

This weekend I am going to be crazy busy getting ready for my Open Studio. Lots of nails will be going in the walls as I decide where to hang everything. Also, I need to figure out what we’ll be serving. Probably Christmas cookies of some sort, in addition to other stuff. I’d love to serve glühwein (hot mulled wine), but I don’t think that’d be feasible unless I rented some equipment, and I’m probably too lazy to do that. Could be an idea for next year, though.

Day 24: Thanksgiving dumpling squash

Posted by on 24 November 2011 | 5 comments

Dumpling squash painting
Dumpling squash, 13 x 18 cm, oil on canvas, €70, ©2011 Julie Galante. Original painting available for sale on Etsy.

If there were any wall space whatsoever in my kitchen, I might like to hang this painting in there. It reminds me how tasty these squash are. Can’t wait to roast up the models for lunch!

This Thanksgiving, I am especially thankful for all of you who take the time to look at my art, comment on posts, and in general offer support to me as an artist. I couldn’t do it without you!

Painting: Evening at the Christmas Market
Evening at the Christmas Market, 15 x 15 cm, oil on canvas, €65, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

The Munich Christmas markets start this weekend! Yay!

I am busy getting ready for my December 4th Open Studio. Invitations went out yesterday, and it has been so fun hearing back from people who are excited to come. If you’ll be in Munich that date and would like an invitation, please contact me (you can find my email address on the About Page).

Day 22: Dementor Bridge

Posted by on 22 November 2011 | 4 comments

Painting: Gebsattelstrasse Munich
Gebsattelstraße, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

This is a bridge in my Munich neighborhood which has a creepy-looking statue of the Münchner Kindl (the city’s cloak-wearing mascot) on it; some friends have dubbed it Dementor Bridge, due to the Kindl’s similarity to certain characters in the Harry Potter books. I think it’s a name that’s going to stick, at least in my head.

This painting is the third of my AEDM ones to sell before being dry enough to list in my Etsy shop. Have to love those enthusiastic collectors!

Day 21: Brussels sprout snake

Posted by on 21 November 2011 | 5 comments

Painting: Brussels Sprouts on the stalk
Brussels sprout stalk, 24 x 18 cm, oil on canvas, €120, ©2011 Julie Galante.

I never really thought about how brussels sprouts grew until a stand at our local farmers market started selling stalks of them. This painting is just the very top of the stalk. The whole thing is a few feet long and has little sprouts growing the whole way down.

At first I wasn’t entirely happy with this painting, but after a bit it started growing on me. Turned on its side, it looks kind of like a skeletal snake-monster.

Day 20: revisiting Wienerplatz

Posted by on 20 November 2011 | 6 comments

Painting: Munich Wienerplatz study #3
Wienerplatz Study #3, 18 x 24 cm, oil on canvas, ©2011 Julie Galante. [SOLD]

I am really enjoying painting every day, even though some days I sit down at the easel and feel a bit idea-less. Nothing sounds appealing to paint. None of my reference photos look interesting, none of the still-life objects I have in the house look painting-worthy. I hate that feeling. But, the commitment I made (however non-binding) to post a new painting each day of November is usually enough to get me to do some painting anyway, even on those days when I’m resisting it. That is what I love about Art Every Day Month – it pushes me to create paintings I wouldn’t have otherwise made. Some days the muse just needs a good flogging.

This painting is a variation on a scene I have painting a couple times before. Today was one of those idea-less days, so I decided to go back to a scene that I knew I liked.

How do you get going on days when you don’t feel inspired?
